Spurred by 15 combined strikeouts from Connor Coleman and Grady Westlund, the W.F. West High School baseball team dominated from the first pitch to beat Shelton 9-0 on Saturday afternoon on the road.
Since the fourth inning in their second game of the season against Anacortes, the Bearcats (5-0, 1-0 EvCo) have allowed just two runs over the last 19 innings. Coleman went four innings and Westlund finished off the shutout. They allowed just a total of three hits.
“Pitchers controlled the game,” W.F. West head coach Jesse Elam said.
Two runs each in the first two innings followed by three in the top of the third gave the Bearcats a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Hiro Smaciarz and Ross Kelley each notched a hit, drove in two runs, scored once and registered at least on stolen bases. Deacon Meller and Hayden Rooney each swiped two bases.
No. 9 hitter Beckman Dvorak went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
“We’ve got guys who would start on other teams,” Elam said. “It is a pretty tough lineup to crack, which is a good thing. Pretty fun group.”
W.F. West will face Centralia in the first of two straight EvCo games on Tuesday.
