College Hoops: Blazers Blow Out Pierce, 78-48, to Wrap Season

Mallory Williams scored 29 points and Centralia College wrapped its women’s basketball season with a 78-48 win over Pierce on Friday night at Michael Smith Gymnasium.

Williams, a freshman from Prairie, hit nine three-pointers in the win.

“That’s kind of the reason we recruited her,” Centralia coach Caleb Sells joked. “Every time she shoots it I think it’s going in. The kids did a good job moving it around and finding her.”

Allison DeBerry scored 17 for Centralia and Carissa Kaut added 10 points.

“It was good,” Sells said of the win, explaining that the Blazers moved to a new dribble-drive offense over the last few games and saw it pay dividends on Friday. “We came out hitting our shots and pushing the ball, and the defense was tough, and they just never looked back.”

The Blazers finished a long, drawn-out season with a 5-4 record, after a series of stops and starts and postponements due to the pandemic.

“I think with all that in consideration it’s a nice way to end it, and we’re looking forward to hitting the ground running next year,” Sells said, noting that his entire roster this year was made up of freshmen. “With all the recruits coming in, we could be pretty special, I think.”

Sells also noted that, despite the complications, the season was a fun one.

“There’s just always that uncertainty and it always wears on you, but this group of girls are such great kids that they just made this year fun,” he said. “We had fun every day and got better as it went on. I’d definitely chalk this season up as a success, considering everything.”
