College Hoops: Trailblazers' Comeback Falls Short Against LCC

Centralia College reeled off two big runs, one at the end of each half, to keep within striking distance, but the Trailblazers were unable to come from behind in a 55-49 loss to Lower Columbia College at home on Friday.

Former W.F. West star Erika Brumfield drained a 3-pointer with 2 ½ minutes remaining to pull the Blazers within three. But after a big defensive stop, the Blazers missed a wide-open look at another trey and missed as the Red Devils held on to escape with the win.

The loss drops the young Blazers team, made up entirely of freshmen, to 2-2 on the season. Both losses came to the undefeated Red Devils (5-0), by a combined nine points.

“They’re still figuring out the college game,” Centralia College coach Caleb Sells said. “And I’m still figuring out how to use them.”

Brumfield finished with a team-high 13 points, while former Rochester wing Lexie Seberburg added 12 and Mallory Williams also put up 12.

“For a young team, the one positive is they’ve adapted to college defense,” Sells said. “We haven’t given up more than 55 points in a game.”

Centralia College will look to get back on track when it travels to Pierce College for a 5:30 p.m. matchup on Tuesday.

The Blazers have already had three games cancelled due to players from other teams testing positive for COVID-19, and only have five games left on the schedule. With some Northwest Athletic Conference programs opting out of this year, Sells said he and his team are fortunate for Athletic Director Bob Peters and Assistant A.D. Jonathan McMillan for making sure the Blazers get to have a season.

“Kudos and hats off to the administrators who are making this happen,” Sells said.
