College Roundup: Liseth Dominant at the Plate for Fairfield

Posted

There's lots of Lewis County athletes playing sports at the college level, especially in the spring. Here's a roundup of how some of them are doing at four-year schools.

Softball

Fairfield University's Lauren Liseth, a junior catcher out of Centralia, was selected as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the MAAC announced on Monday. Liseth went 2 for 3 in both ends of a doubleheader against the University of Connecticut, which the Stags swept. She drove in four runs during the series, including an RBI double in Game 1 and a three-run homer in Game 2. Liseth has started every game for the 10-9 Stags and is hitting a blistering .462 with six homers and 25 RBIs. She leads the Stags in batting average, hits, doubles, RBIs, home runs, total bases, slugging percentage and walks. Her .462 batting average was 15th among all NCAA Division I players as of Monday evening, and her gaudy .565 on-base percentage ranked 11th in the nation. Fairfield will play a doubleheader at Yale today, and will open MAAC action at Iona on Friday.

Dani Braun, a freshman from Chehalis, walked in a pinch-hit appearance for the University of Washington in its opener Friday at Arizona. The Huskies (24-8) won 7-1, and Braun has hits in two of her three official at-bats this season. She has also, operating mostly as a pinch-runner, scored 12 runs.

Jet'aime Mullins, a senior from White Pass High School, is hitting .289 for the Lewis & Clark University softball team. Mullins has played in 27 games for the 11-17 Pioneers, with two home runs and 16 RBIs.

Jordan Zurfluh, a junior outfielder from Adna, scored a run for Central Washington University in an 11-2 win over Montana State-Billings on Thursday. Zurfluh is hitting .357 (5 of 14) for the Wildcats (9-10) this season and has appeared in 15 games.

Western Oregon University's Hannah Pomeroy, a senior pitcher out of Mossyrock, allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work to get a win during the Wolves' 5-4 win over Western Washington University on Saturday. Pomeroy leads the Western Oregon (17-16, 8-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) pitching staff with a 6-3 record and 3.91 earned-run average, and is hitting .260 with five home runs and 17 RBIs.

Amanda Woods, a freshman from Pe Ell, went a combined 3 for 7 with an RBI as George Fox University lost both ends of a doubleheader, 18-0 and 12-8, to California Lutheran on Monday. Woods is hitting .368 and has started all 24 games for the 13-11 Bruins, and has gone 1-2 as a pitcher.

Jessika-Jo Sandrini hit an RBI single for Siena University in an 8-5 loss to New Mexico State Monday in the first game of a doubleheader, and both Jessika-Jo and Jordan Sandrini had two hits in a 10-5 loss to the Aggies in the nightcap. Jessika-Jo, a junior, is hitting .386 for the Saints and has started all 16 games, and has been hit by a pitch eight times — which gives her an average of .50 times being hit by a pitch per game, the fourth-best ration in NCAA Division I. The remainder of the Saints' roster has drawn three free bases, total, via beaning. Jordan Sandrini, a freshman, has appeared in 15 games for the 5-11 Saints.

Baseball

Robert Pehl, a sophomore second baseman for the University of Washington, went 4 for 10 in a three-game series against the University of Southern California in Seattle over the weekend. Teammate Erik Forgione went 1 for 1 with a stolen base in an 8-3 win to wrap up the series on Sunday. The Huskies went 2-1 to improve to 2-4 in Pac-12 play at 6-16 overall. Pehl is hitting .289 — third among the team's everyday players — with nine RBIs and 31 total bases, both of which rank second on the team.

Chris Bishop, a sophomore pitcher from Rochester, was touched up for three earned runs and eight hits over 3 2/3 innings in Pacific Lutheran University's 6-3 loss to Puget Sound on Sunday in Tacoma. Bishop, playing first base, had a single in the Lutes' 4-1 loss in Game 2 of a doubleheader the day before. Bishop has a 1-3 record on the mound with 26 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings worked. Teammate Dominick Courcy, a senior outfielder from Centralia, leads the Lutes' (13-9) everyday players with a .357 batting average in 20 games, with a team-high 17 runs, 25 hits and 12 stolen bases on 14 attempts.

Colton Schoelkopf, a catcher from W.F. West, is hitting .321 for Colorado Mesa University, and has appeared in 15 games for the 18-5 Mavericks — who lead the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 12-1 record.

Ryan Knutz, a senior catcher from Rochester by way of Centralia College, knocked an RBI single for Bellevue University in an 8-1 win over Midland Friday in Fremont, Neb. Knutz is hitting .235 with 16 RBIs for the 19-4-1 Bruins.

Mikel Elliott, a junior from White Pass High School, was second in the girls 800 meters for Concordia at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open Saturday in Portland. Elliott crossed the finish line in 2 minutes, 20.4 seconds, with teammate and Adna product Megan VonBargen taking 10th in the same race at 2:27.28.

Austin Hamilton, a sophomore from Chehalis, finished sixth in the javelin for Boise State University at the Arizona State Invitational on Saturday. Hamilton's best toss went for 189 feet, 6 inches, and was 3 feet off of his lifetime best.
