Driver Strikes and Kills Man in Tent Along Oregon Interstate

A 27-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning after a 20-year-old woman driving north along Interstate 205 left the roadway and struck his tent, the Portland Police Bureau said.

Terrence Tombe was inside a tent near the the Southeast Powell Boulevard exit when he was hit around 3:20 a.m., police said. He died at the scene, officials said.



The driver, April Leigh Johnson, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance, police said. On Monday, police said she had been charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide, Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Reckless Driving. She was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.

There have been a total of 63 traffic deaths, including 27 pedestrian deaths, in Portland this year, according to police. The last time there was 63 traffic deaths in Portland in a single year was in 1990, police said.
