Ducks Pull Away From Cardinals

The Winlock boys basketball team made things interesting for a half, but couldn't pull the upset on Toutle Lake, falling 80-40 after a rough latter two quarters.

Winlock ended up outscoring its hosts in a tight second quarter, and went into the locker room trailing by seven, at 31-24. Once the teams got back out onto the court, though, the Ducks brought out a new full-court press, and the Cardinals had few answers.

The guests ended up turning the ball over 26 times on the night, and with the giveaways increasing late, Toutle Lake took advantage. The Ducks went on a 29-6 run in the third quarter, with 18 points coming from Connor Cox, and then scored 20 more in the fourth.

“We just can’t turn the ball over that many times and expect to stay in the game,” Winlock coach Cole Doughty said. “In the first half we did a good job defensively of keeping track of Cox and (Zach) Swanson but when they got going in the second half it got tough.”

Cox finished with 30 points, and Swanson had 23. Payton Sickles led Winlock with 14 points, Chase Scofield scored nine, and Landon Cline had eight points and seven assists.

Winlock will get a road trip to Randle on Saturday, facing 2B No. 3 Morton-White Pass.
