An Evergreen State College student died Monday in on-campus housing and three people were injured with symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning.

A student residence manager at the on-campus Modular Apartments in Olympia called Evergreen police when they were not able to contact the students Monday evening, according to a news release. Earlier that day, a contractor working in the Modular Apartments responded to carbon monoxide alarms.

The Evergreen police officer broke down the door and performed emergency CPR. The officer, along with two students, was hospitalized. The officer was released Tuesday morning.

The McLane Black Lake Fire Department conducted carbon monoxide testing in the area and campus officials contacted students in nearby campus housing.

"This is a tragedy, and we grieve for our students and families," said Evergreen President John Carmichael in the release. "The safety of students, staff and faculty remain Evergreen's top priority."

The Washington State Patrol is investigating, and did not respond to a request for details Tuesday evening.

The Thurston County Coroner's Office will make an official determination on the student's cause of death.
