Ferguson, Tumwater, Win Pitchers’ Duel Over Tigers

Tumwater sophomore Ella Ferguson turned in one of her best outings of the league season Thursday, leading the T-Birds to their fourth win in as many days in a 4-0 victory of Centralia.

Ferguson struck out 15 on the day, giving up just one hit and one walk, though she did hit three batters.

For the better part of the afternoon, Centralia’s Hollynn Wakefield was just as good; the two traded hitless frames through the third, and both had given up just one hit through the fifth.

In that fifth inning, though, the T-Birds got things going with the ground attack. Erika Schock reached on a bunt single, and Ferguson lay one of her own down to put two on with no outs. A third bunt in a row was popped up, but a walk loaded the bases, and an error in the field plated two runs to break the deadlock. Zoe Fields doubled home a run, and Tumwater had a 3-0 lead.

Ferguson made it 4-0 in the sixth on an RBI single, scoring Schock, then retired the side in order in the seventh to seal the win.

Wakefield finished with four runs allowed on five hits for the Tigers in six innings of work; she struck out nine herself. Payton Baumel had Centralia’s lone hit.

Tumwater is set to wrap up its jam-packed week at home Friday, taking on Aberdeen. Centralia will get the weekend off before hosting Black Hills next Wednesday.
