On March 1, Fords Prairie Elementary, Centralia, celebrated the birthday of famed children’s author Dr. Seuss with many activities.

First through third grade students read the story “Batholomew and the Oobleck” and then got to make the gooey, green Oobleck. They had an individual coloring contest and a classroom door decorating contest. One winner was chosen from each grade level for the two activities.

Teachers read excerpts from four Dr. Seuss books: “Ten Apples Up on Top,” “Horton Hears a Who,”w “Happy Birthday to You” and “The Cat in the Hat.”

Nikki Ames, first-grade teacher, then emceed a “Minute to Win It” Dr. Seuss style assembly where students participated in several different tasks. For “Ten Apples Up on Top” they had to try to stack four apples on top of each other and hold it for one minute.  After “Horton Hears a Who” was read, students had a box of tissues tied around their middle and had to empty the box one-handed in one minute.

Next, as “Happy Birthday to You” was read, two students from each grade level tried to keep a balloon in the air for one minute.

The last book was “The Cat In The Hat.” For this challenge, a student had to get as many toys in a red and white striped “hat” on top of a teachers head in one minute.

Even The Cat in the Hat showed up for the assembly. David Roberts, Fords Prairie principal, dressed up as The Cat In The Hat.
