Residents arrived early and lined up Friday to sign children up for swimming lessons at the Gail and Carolyn Shaw Aquatics Center hours before the popular facility opened for the summer.

Open swims will be held every day with two sessions, the first from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the second from 3 to 6 p.m. The cost is $5 per person for each session. Only cash and checks are accepted as payment. On July 4 there will be an open swim only from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Beginning Monday, June 20, adult lap swims will be available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at a cost of $3 per person.

During open swims, patrons are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis after season pass holders have been admitted. A season pass can be purchased for $40 by Chehalis residents at the Chehalis Parks and Recreation Office located at 1321 S. Market Blvd., Chehalis. Call 360-748-0271 for additional information.

A free Kiddy Spray Park is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, weather permitting.

At the aquatics center, children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. A discount of $1 is available for senior citizens and those in the military upon request.

“Since 1959, generations of kids numbering in the thousands have enjoyed swimming in the Outdoor Community Pool,” the City of Chehalis wrote. “In 2014, an exciting new project took place that underwent a $2.2 million renovation through the efforts of the Chehalis Foundation.  The new Shaw Aquatics Center opened in August of 2014. The new aquatics center has slides, water toys, a beach-entry-style pool, new fencing, concrete walkways and benches. It is sure to be a highlight for the Chehalis community for years to come.”
