Gilreath’s Double Pushes Riverhawks Past Pirates

Deadlocked at 2-2, the Adna baseball team made a mistake at the wrong time, and Toledo capitalized in the seventh inning.

After Rayder Stemkoski singled to start the inning, an error in the infield advanced Stemkoski to second, and put Geoffrey Glass on first, and Conor Gilreath doubled to center field to give the Riverhawks the lead, and the win, 4-2, Thursday in Adna in a key league battle.

But despite the late heroics, it was a pitcher’s duel for most of the game, as Adna’s Tristan Percival and Toledo’s Caiden Schultz matched blow-for-blow for most of the contest.

Percival went five innings, striking out 12 and allowing just two earned runs with four walks and one hit. Asher Guerrero came in for two innings of relief and gave up two hits with three punchouts and one walk.

On the other side, Toledo’s Caiden Schultz couldn’t be stopped, pitching a complete game with 14 strikeouts, no walks, and no earned runs.

“This was a good high school baseball game,” Adna coach Jake LeDuc said. “It was well pitched and well played. It was about who made the least mistakes, little things didn’t go our way.”

The Riverhawks got out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning, but the Pirates responded in the third, with Chance Muller hitting a two-run double to even things up. After that, the pitchers locked down and held the team’s off the scoreboard until the Riverhawks’ seventh inning got them the win.

The Pirates will look to respond against Ocosta on Friday while the Riverhawks take on Castle Rock next Friday in a doubleheader.
