Girls Hoops: Tenino Overcomes First Half to Down Elma

Posted

Ashley Schow scored 21 points and the Tenino Beavers overcame the Elma Eagles 37-19 in a 1A Evergreen Conference girls basketball game on Tuesday in Elma.

Beavers coach Scott Ashmore said it was “a tale of two halves,” as the Beavers fell into the trap of Elma’s zone defense, taking the first available shot instead of being patient and probing the zone for a hole. Tenino led just 12-11 at halftime before turning in a 25-8 second half. Tenino shot just 15-of-55 from the floor on the evening.

“We threw up a lot of shots in the first half that weren’t part of our offense,” Ashmore said. “(Elma) tried to force us to play their way. And we did.”

Elma (3-1) hosts Hoquiam on Friday at 1 p.m.

Hailey Brooks scored 11 points with five rebounds as the Mossyrock Vikings used a 21-0 third quarter to pull away from the Terriers of the Washington School for the Deaf, 51-15, in a 1B Columbia Valley League girls basketball game on Tuesday in Mossyrock.

Payton Torrey had eight points and six assists, Caelyn Marshall added six points, four assists and six steals, and Abbie Lovan pitched in with five points, five rebounds and eight steals.

Mossyrock was extremely balanced offensively, with each Viking scoring at least two points. Vikings coach Autumn Moorcroft was pleased with the unselfishness of Torrey and the balanced scoresheet.

“I think I have more different weapons this year and to balance out the scoring, it makes it hard to stop us,” Moorcroft said.

Mossyrock (2-0) visits Pe Ell on Thursday at 7 p.m.
