Marina Smith recorded a brace and an assist and Toledo was able to overcome a tough Class 1A King’s Way Christian team at home in a non-league match on Friday.

King’s Way Christian was coming off a 4-0 victory over defending 2B District 4 powerhouse Kalama earlier this season, and the Riverhawks knew they were in for a battle, Toledo coach Noel Vazquez said.

“It was a team effort,” Vazquez said. “We knew they were a tough team, we knew they were a big 1A private school and we knew they had beaten Kalama 4-0.”

But the Riverhawks were ready.

Smith opened up Toledo’s scoring with an unassisted goal in the eighth minute, followed quickly by Jazzy Zarate’s goal in the 11th minute off an assist by Smith.

Smith knocked in a header off Rose Dillon’s corner kick in the 48th minute and Briza Gallegos hit the game winner in the 64th minute to give Toledo the win.

Daphne Bybee recorded five saves.

“We’re just gonna take it one game at a time,” Vazquez said. “We had 12 eligible players and one or two bad injuries could end our season.”

Toledo moves to 3-0 with wins over Hoquiam and Iwaco. The Riverhawks host Forks at 6 p.m. on Monday.
