Hanson Fans 17 to Help T-Birds Top Wolves

Jordan Hanson punched out 17 batters and Tumwater was able to hold off rival Black Hills for a 3-1 victory at home on Tuesday.

Hanson was nearly flawless on the mound, striking out 17 of the 19 batters he faced and threw strikes on 62 of his 86 pitches. He surrendered just one run on a lone hit and one walk.

The Wolves’ lone run came after Alexander Shepler led off the inning with a ground-ball single to shortstop. Shepler stole second, then scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Thunderbirds had already scored in the first inning after Eddie Marson reached home plate on a wild pitch. After the Wolves tied it up in the fifth, Brayden Oram’s ground ball RBI scored Thompson to give Tumwater the lead for good.

Landon Roy’s line-drive, RBI single to right field scored T Gaither to put the T-Birds up 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring for the day.

Derek Thompson led the T-Birds at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a run and a walk, while Marson was 2 for 3 with a run. Alex Overbay also notched a hit.

Blake Smith closed for Tumwater, striking out one and walking one in one inning of scoreless and hitless work.

Shepler collected the Wolves’ lone hit and run, going 1 for 3 at the plate. He also struck out two batters and allowed one earned one on four hits and three walks in three innings of work on the mound.

Derek Clark pitched 2.1 innings for Black Hills, striking out two and allowing two earned runs on two hits and one walk, while Alex Lynch walked one and allowed a hit in 0.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Tumwater and Black Hills face off again at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Black Hills
