A homeless woman gave birth on a tarp in downtown Portland Saturday, officials said.
Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a call about an imminent birth at a camp near Southwest Naito Boulevard and Harvey Milk Street around 6 p.m., spokesperson Rick Graves said Wednesday. They arrived to find that the baby had already been born.
The woman’s campmates used a tarp, believing it to be the cleanest surface available for the birth, Graves said. The mother, 26 years old, and the baby were taken to a hospital. It was at least the second homeless birth on Portland’s streets this year, Graves said.
KGW first reported the birth.
