How much it could cost to see UW Huskies at the national championship

Are you trying to attend the college football national championship to watch the Washington Huskies take on the Michigan Wolverines? It'll cost you a pretty penny — one that's made of gold and weighs about five times its normal weight.

Kickoff is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Here is how much it could cost you to cheer on the Huskies in person, as of Tuesday morning:

The cheapest tickets for the championship game were about $900 on Vivid Seats, StubHub or Ticketmaster, and that's for the nosebleeds near the top of the stadium, excluding fees or service charges.

If money is no object, seats in the lower bowl of the stadium, right around the 50-yard line, were about $3,500. In other words, a mortgage payment on a typical Seattle-area home with 20% down or one 1997 Honda Accord with 140,000 miles on it.

The most expensive seats in the house were in Lower Level Section 106, Row A at around $12,500 per seat.

UW already sold out its allotment of 20,000 tickets, a university spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

Nonstop round-trip airfare to Houston ran around $1,000.

An itinerary with layovers gives you more options, although you may be stuck traveling for over 12 hours. Most itineraries were listed above $600 for a round-trip ticket within one day before and after the game. A Spirit round-trip flight from Jan. 7 through Jan. 9 was listed at $445 — but you'd have a 33-hour overnight layover in Las Vegas.

Alaska Airlines announced on the social media platform X Tuesday it added over 1,700 seats on flights to Houston, but a search through Alaska's website shortly after the announcement showed no direct flights with seats available from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to either of Houston's major airports.

Another, much cheaper option: Fly direct to Austin ($109 one-way Jan. 7), which is three hours from Houston by car, though you'll have to factor in the cost of a rental. Greyhound bus tickets were listed for about $25 for the three-hour bus ride from Austin to Houston.

Several hotels near NRG Stadium, which seats 72,000 fans, had rooms available.

On Location, the championship's official travel package partner, is offering packages including hotel accommodations and transportation starting at $1,825. Game tickets and airfare can be added at an additional cost. Visit st.news/championship for more information.

If you can't make it to Houston, the game will be broadcast on ESPN and the ESPN app, as well as on KJR 93.3 FM. Or, if you're looking for company, watch parties will be held across the country. Once confirmed, they can be found at st.news/HuskiesWatchParties.
