Looking to clean up after the holidays?

The Lewis County Department of Public Works will host a free collection event the three weekends after Christmas to collect trees and other holiday decorations.

According to the department, last year’s events saved 6.2 tons of old Christmas trees from going to landfills.

Volunteers will be on hand outside the gate at the Lewis County Central Transfer Station in Centralia, located at 1411 S. Tower Ave.

The event will run daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on:

• Dec. 27, 28 and 29

• Jan. 3, 4 and 5

• Jan. 10, 11 and 12

According to Public Works, WSU Lewis County Master Recycler Composter Volunteers offer the Centralia service for free, though donations will be accepted to fund their community education programs.

The event is run in conjunction with Pacific Mobile and the Lewis County Department of Public Works Solid Waste Utility Division.

Accepted items also include paper holiday cards, wrapping paper, gift boxes and corrugated cardboard boxes. Decorations must be removed from trees and wreaths, and flocked or artificial trees or wreaths will not be accepted.

Lewis County residents can also bring their unwanted trees to the Morton Transfer Station from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday from Dec. 26 through Jan. 11.
