Carl (Bouze) Conrad Ulrich passed away at the age of 91 on Sept. 25, 2021. Born Feb. 23, 1930, in Menlo near fiRaymond in Pacific County, Washington, Carl was the only child of Swiss immigrants Clem and Mary Ulrich (Huber).
Carl graduated Willapa Valley High School in 1947 and then enlisted in the United States Air Force the same year. Carl was honorably discharged in 1950 and became a woodsman. Carl met the love of his life, Alice (Schuler), at a Swiss wedding in Centralia, Washington, and they married June 26, 1954. The two started a dairy farm in Lebam, Washington, in 1954 and moved their dairy to Chehalis, Washington, in 1967.
Carl took great pride in his farm. Carl loved the woods, hunting and always had binoculars within reach. He enjoyed storytelling and visiting with people, friends and neighbors. Carl’s kitchen table (the nucleus) welcomed all walks of life and was a constant source of vibrant discussions. Carl was involved in the Lewis-Pacific Swiss Society and the Tacoma Men’s Swiss Society.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Alice, of 67 years, two children, Albert and Catherine, six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A religious service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chehalis, Washington, on Oct. 8, 2021, at 11 a.m. followed by a funeral procession to the Claquato Historic Cemetery. A memorial reception will follow afterward at 1681 State Route 6, Chehalis, Washington, in the Ulrich Barn.
By Carl Ulrich
It is not long that we are here and tis not long until one is gone
gone from friends of far and near
left behind to carry on.
Pleasant were the times we had
lengthy was my stay
tis not the time to be long sad
although now I am called away.
And thus as I now do depart
true friends behind I leave
for me do not have heavy heart
for me do not grieve.
Should we never meet again
know eye to eye we see
you may gaze across the hillside
and therefore think of me.
I cross that last divide
waiting for you on the other side.
