In Loving Memory of Harley Thompson Jr.: 1930-2023

Posted

Harley E. Thompson Jr., of Chehalis, passed away on Feb. 9, 2023. He was born on April 24, 1930, to Harley and Louella (Rockwood) Thompson and was the oldest of seven children. He grew up on Crego Hill in Adna, Washington and attended school in Adna. He graduated from W.F. West High School in Chehalis in 1949. Harley enjoyed reminiscing about his childhood on Crego Hill and had many fond memories of playing on the 40-acre property with his siblings.

In 1950, Harley married his high school sweetheart, Vera (Prill). They raised two sons, Dan and Tim. Harley was a sergeant in the U.S. National Guard for four years. He also worked for Tires Incorporated before beginning a remarkable 26-year career as a Chehalis firefighter in 1960. In December 1964, while fighting an apartment house fire, a porch collapsed on him. Harley spent months recovering from his injuries and returned to the Chehalis Fire Department in 1965, eventually becoming assistant fire chief and city fire marshal. Harley retired in 1986 and spent his retirement living in Apache Junction, Arizona during the winter and traveling on cruises. He was a wonderful storyteller with a witty sense of humor. Harley was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Harley is survived by his wife of 72 years, Vera; sons Dan of Chehalis and Tim (Dianne) of Sumner; grandchildren Justin and Meagan; siblings Glen, Sharon and Linda; and his beloved dog Max.
