Hilda E. Miller, a quintessential member of the Greatest Generation, died on Monday, July 19, 2021, in Leavenworth, Washington, at age 92.
Hilda was born in WaKeeney, Kansas, on May 5, 1929, to J. George and Katherine Deines. The eighth of nine children, Hilda's grounding and foundation came from the rock-solid traditions of a Volga German immigrant farming family.
With her foundation built, she adventured to Olympia, Washington. A young Lloyd Miller had done the same from North Dakota. The two met at a dance and married in 1949. Hilda and Lloyd spent more than 60 years in Centralia, Washington, where she made a substantial impact on countless people.
She was a sister, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother and an aunt. She was a faithful and involved member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a passionate and dedicated second grade teacher at Centralia’s Edison Elementary School. She was a service-oriented member of numerous organizations in her community.
She had many friends with whom she enjoyed walking, golfing, camping, playing bridge and even after moving to Leavenworth remained close to them through visits, phone calls, cards and lots of emails. Hilda moved to Mountain Meadows Senior Living community in Leavenworth, Washington, in 2015 and quickly made new friends, continued volunteering and became a regular member of the senior center’s weekly bridge game. She lived well and will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Hilda is survived by her sister Mary Ann Napravnik (Seattle, Washington); her children, Beckie Peterson (John), of Leavenworth Washington, Mark Miller (Jody) of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren Todd Miller, Scott Miller (Holly and great-grandson Jack), Kyle Peterson (Kathrine and great-granddaughter Stella), Eric Peterson (Allison and great-granddaughter Brooklyn), Brett Peterson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven of her siblings and her husband, Lloyd.
A celebration of life will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Centralia Washington, on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Centralia, Washington.
