Jean E. (Hares) Sherman, 98, passed away peacefully Dec. 17, 2024, at home in Cinebar, Washington. She was born Feb. 17, 1926, to Wesley and Mina Hares and was raised in Fleming, New York.
On June 28, 1947, Jean married Claire Sherman, and for the next 20 years, they raised their family in Elbridge, New York, before moving to San Diego. In 1975, Jean, Claire and their daughters and husbands bought a farm in Cinebar. Jean loved busy farm life: raising animals, churning butter, gardening, canning and enjoying the country. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing, walking with friends and, in later life, puzzles and crosswords. She enjoyed church, family gatherings and keeping up with everyone’s activities.
Jean was devoted to her family. She is survived by daughters, Sandy (Joe) Slimack and Cher Williams; sons, Dean (Janet), Tim (Helen) and Scott (Judy) Sherman; grandchildren, Julie (Ken) Wiseman, Amy Ayers, Anna (Andrew) Campbell, Lauryn Sherman, Kaylyn (Jimmy) Kontras, and Joel (Sasha), Sam (Kari), Gabe (Amanda), Zach (Amber) and Andrew (Sarah) Sherman; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great granddaughters. Also surviving are two siblings, Evelyn Finch and William Hares, and her life-long friend and niece, Margaret Chamberlain. Jean was preceded in death by her husband and 10 siblings.
Our family extends heartfelt love and appreciation to Amy Ayers for three years of dedicated caregiving and many thanks to the hospice community for their support and guidance.
