In Loving Memory of Margaret Reed: 1944-2022

Posted

Margaret Reed, age 78, of Olympia, Washington, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2022. Margaret was born on June 13, 1944, in Willmar, Minnesota, to Joe and Grace Arends.

She graduated from Glenwood High School in 1962 and married her husband, Duncan Munro Reed, on Sept. 1, 1968.

Margaret was a member of the Washington State Grange from 1988 to 2004, holding several offices, as well as a member of Pine Burr Rebecca Lodge for many years. She was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon of Community Presbyterian Church of Onalaska, a member of Valley Garden Club in Onalaska and authored a family cookbook.

Margaret enjoyed baking cookies, pies, cakes and canned fruits and vegetables all of her life. She also enjoyed knitting, quilting and other crafts. She was most at peace in her greenhouse or garden, tending to many of nature's plants. Margaret was always busy with one project or another. She loved to help many people and do many things. Most of what she loved was at her own home. You could always find her in her garden, in her kitchen or at her sewing machine.

She had so many talents. She could hand milk a cow faster than anyone (even won a contest at the fair once), whip up an eight time batch of cookies (always made with love), grow the biggest and prettiest flowers and can the best fruit or jams.

Margaret was the backbone and center of her family. She was the softy you went to to ask for permission or money. She loved being a grandma most of all. All five of the grandkids, and one great-grandchild knew her love and affection. They could make her smile the largest of all.

Margaret had an infectious laugh and loved to support her community. She was always helping someone in one capacity or another. She had several "moms" over her life as she supported the ladies she cared for as if they were her own family member. Margaret will be missed by many, but cherished in all our hearts.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Duncan Reed; father and mother, Joe and Grace Arends; and her sister, Alvera Klosterboer.  She is survived by her children, JoAnn Sabisch (Eric Sabisch), Gary Reed (Nicki) and Linda Patraca (Chris Thomas); grandchildren, Megan Gracyalny (Spencer), Roberto Patraca (Ashlyn), Drew Sabisch, Joaquin Patraca and Emily Sabisch; great-grandson, Michael Gracyalny; as well as her six brothers, Alvin, Gerald, Donny, Merlin, Harvey and Joe Arends.
