An inmate has escaped the Cedar Creek Corrections Center near Rochester.

Garrett Stephen Young, 32, was found to be missing at 2 a.m. Saturday during routine checks, according to the Department of Corrections.

“Young appears to have escaped early this morning by digging under a fence at a gym where he was temporarily housed as part of ongoing facility-wide COVID-19 safety precautions,” according to a news release.

The Department of Corrections has deployed an inmate recovery team from Cedar Creek and the Stafford Creek Corrections Center to search for Young. The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol are assisting with the search.

Young was last seen wearing tan khaki pants, a red sweatshirt and a tan jacket. He is 6-foot-3, 200 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.

Authorities say anyone who sees young should not approach him but instead call 911 or 360-359-4100.

Young was scheduled to be released in February 2024 following convictions in Skagit County for possession of a stolen vehicle and attempting to elude.

The Cedar Creek Corrections Center is located in Littlerock.
