Jeremiah Nubbe Captures Discus Title in National Tournament

Rainier track and field star Jeremiah Nubbe can add a national title to his resume after winning the discus at the USA Track and Field (USATF) National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships on Sunday in Jacksonville, Florida.

The tournament contains some of the top 17- and 18-year-old high school track and field athletes in the nation, and Nubbe won with a toss of 189.07 feet, besting the runner up, Ahmari Avin, by nearly 14 feet (175.59 feet). He also threw the hammer but scratched on all three throws and did not place.

His discus throw on Sunday wasn’t even close to his personal best of 200 feet 2 inches, a mark he hit while placing second at The Outdoor Nationals, Presented by Nike on June 30 at the University of Oregon.

Nubbe, 18, is currently fifth in the nation in both the discus and the hammer. His PR in hammer is 224 feet, 8.5 inches, 12 feet behind the nation’s leader, and his dicus PR is 10 feet behind the leader.

His latest victory only adds to a long-list of accomplishments for the soon-to-be senior at Rainier High School.

Nubbe was the Class 2B state champion in the discus as a freshman (147-01) before his sophomore season was canceled due to the pandemic. During his junior season in 2021, Nubbe began climbing the national ranks in discus and hammer.

He first began with breaking a 24-year-old school shot put record on April 1, an event he had just taken up. On April 19, he broke the state junior discus record with a then-PR of 196 feet even, which ranked him second in the nation at the time.

After placing second in the discus at The Outdoor Nationals, he was named the 2020-21 Gatorade Washington Boys Track and Field Player of the Year, the first athlete from Rainier to do so.

His athletic prowess combined with a perfect 4.0 GPA has allowed Nubbe to rack up a slew of Division-I scholarship offers. Last month, he said he had narrowed his list down to three of four schools.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Nubbe will now be off from competition until the 2021-22 high school track and field competition begins next spring.
