Letter to the Editor: Beloved East Lewis County Librarian Will Be Missed

Posted

It is with great regret that I learned Mary Prophit has left the Randle Mountain View Timberland Library.

I have used libraries from small towns to big cities and large universities. Mary, with her concern for service to patrons, was the best and most respected librarian I’ve ever known.

She provided many special programs for all, including StoryTrail in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest for children, pizza night for teenagers and reading programs for adults.

A Morton-White Pass school teacher once referred to her, only half-jokingly, as Saint Mary. She personally established and maintained popup libraries in Mineral and Morton. She was directly instrumental in establishing the Veterans Cafe and the Mountain View Library so that rural veterans could locally get medical advice and schedule appointments via telemedicine rather than having to make long drives. The Veterans Cafe is a first-in-the-nation healthcare service that is being considered for national implementation.  Mary will be sorely missed by many. We all wish her success and happiness in her near and long-term future.
