Letter to the Editor: Cruz Comments Didn’t Merit Publication

“That’s offensive. Black women are what, 6% of the US population? He’s saying to 94% of Americans, I don’t give a damn about you."

This is the final quote in an article citing the opinion of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, the same senator who championed former President Donald Trump’s claims of voter fraud — even after the riot, and even after more than 60 court rejections of repeated challenges. Cruz voted against certifying the election results that night and said he has no second thoughts about that vote.

“Her political negatives are so strong. She’s just not very good at this stuff. I mean, you’ve seen the weird video of her with kids. That’s almost like a Stepford Wives robotic. It’s bizarre,” Cruz said.

This is another quote from the Jan. 31, 2022 article the Chronicle editorial staff felt strongly enough about to publish on its website. The paper that informs and (supposedly) reflects our community. What is the point you make by running an article regarding a Texas senator so focused on the shenanigans in Washington D.C., that he left his home state helpless to the machinations of big energy, and not just during the crisis in winter 2020 (when Cruz notoriously decided to run away to Cancun, Mexico) but again this year since because he lied about fixing his Texas power grid? How pertinent are the words of an incompetent, lying senator from another state to readers in Lewis County?

Ted Cruz supported the authoritarian government of the man who publicly called Cruz’s own wife “fat and ugly.” How could he support such a racist pig of a man? (Perhaps because Cruz is one himself?) When we fail to stand up against misogyny and racism, we support it by default. Are The Chronicle editors so fond of his racist, misogynistic statements? Do Chronicle staff feel those words dovetail so perfectly with their own sexist, racist readership, they just had to publish?

The supreme court has yet to accurately reflect the racial makeup of the U.S., but at least our current president is attempting to bring that into balance. Our current president isn’t frightened by having women, even women of (gasp!) color on the bench of the supreme court. Cruz, on the other hand, can’t quite seem to stomach the idea that any woman might be as educated, as intelligent, as ambitious and as astute as any random male on the Supreme Court.

The Chronicle should return to a time of editorial ethics and support efforts of inclusion, rather than continuing small-minded opportunities to cause hatred and further divide our community. Please understand that not all readers of The Chronicle are simpletons whose opinions can be easily warped by manufactured outrage and dog whistles to racism.
