Letter to the Editor: Do Something for the Children — Support the Pearl Street Pool

Posted

It’s with no surprise, but disappointment, that the City of Centralia voted to not open the outdoor pool. I think if a levy would have been put on the ballot, it would have passed.

Many hours and volunteers over the years helped fund the pool to be rebuilt.

There is still a huge interest by Centralia residents who support it. So, I propose that there should be a play area adjacent to the splash pool. We don't need another tavern, coffee shop or pot shop. It should remain an area for the children.

The parks in Centralia are not as safe as in years passed. I don't need to elaborate on why. Having a place for kids to play near the police station seems like a win-win to me.

Remember, it was the owners of Thorbeckes who helped keep the indoor pool and racquetball courts open. When the kids wanted a skate park, it was the Fullers foundation that provided funds to build it. Both places are still being used by children from all over Lewis County.

Let's do something for the children of Centralia that’s funded by the city of Centralia, instead of making excuses that the city can't afford it. They had 13 years to figure it out!

I welcome everyone who agrees with me to let the City of Centralia know.
