Letter to the editor: Drivers, please turn your lights on and slow down

Posted

Lights, please.

This letter is a reminder to use the headlights on your car properly. It is that time of year when we don’t have very much daylight. It stays dark into the waking hours and gets dark early in the evening.

We also have early morning fog. It is difficult to see an unlit car in these conditions. You may be able to see fine, but other drivers cannot see you. In the evening, it is common to leave the parking area in good light, but to arrive at your destination in darker conditions.

Please remember to turn your lights on.

Now that your lights are on, a reminder on proper usage of the high beams. Please turn them off when approaching another vehicle, whether head on or from behind, even on Interstate 5. The high beams may help you see better, but they blind the other driver.

Lastly, in less than ideal driving conditions, please have patience. Not everyone has your excellent night vision or level of comfort in driving fast in the dark.

Slow down and keep a safe driving distance. The extra time required to get to your destination really won’t hurt.

Anything.
