Letter to the Editor: Government Freebies Led to Inflation

Posted

Commodity money is money that can be exchanged for a commodity such as gold. The U.S. was on the gold standard until 1971. Our dollar is now a “fiat” money with no backing except the value of our economy.

When our federal government prints or borrows from the Federal Reserve (which creates the money that it loans), the new trillions of fiat money inflate the money supply and decrease the value of your existing dollars, this creating inflation.

If you add water to the soup, without adding chicken, the food value of a spoon of soup is less. You cannot get something for nothing. If the meat companies raise the price of bacon, it is a symptom of the government caused inflation, not the cause of the inflation.

Your federal government leaders under President Joe Biden are in the active process of “fundamentally changing” the relationship of that government to you the citizen and changing the power of that government, removing your freedom in order to put the government in charge of every activity of the people of America. This of course is contrary to the idea of a free country and contrary to the U.S. Constitution.

There are two types of people promoting this. The smart ones think they can make America “more fair and just,” or want more power, if the government has absolute control of the people, our economy, and our rights, by buying the people with government money and benefits. The others are those who take government gifts without realizing that the gifts are taken from them to give to them. Something for nothing, which is impossible. So, support the Democrats, and many weak Republicans, or don’t!

Marty Ansley’s hateful letter in the Feb. 8 edition of The Chronicle requires a response. Hate and name calling is not a plan. Half of the voters chose Donald Trump twice, and spewing hateful rhetoric against half of Americans and their president is very disrespectful and divisive. I do not hate President Biden, although I strongly disagree with what he and his government are doing.
