Letter to the Editor: Hope and Excellence on Horizon in Centralia School District

Posted

As we end the 2020-21 school year, I want to share sincere thanks to our community, staff, families and students for creating success in challenging circumstances.

A global pandemic and a double levy failure are among a few of the challenges we have faced as a district. In the face of adversity, however, Centralia rose to ensure everything possible was done to create success for students.

Thank you to our community.  Our community supported a levy, partnered to serve students, participated in committees, task forces and summits, delivered meals and materials, offered feedback and reached out to help in countless ways.

From individuals to organizations, the support was phenomenal. I am so appreciative and thankful to live and work in a community willing and eager to partner with us to serve our children. I am thankful that our community understands the importance of our children and our district to the future of Centralia.

Thank you to our staff. Our staff worked tirelessly to meet the needs of students. Every position, from bus drivers, food service workers, secretaries, teachers, coaches, custodians and principals, to the district office and more contributed to the success of our district and our students this year.

Staff learned new ways of work and instruction, took on new roles, and continued to learn and respond to the needs of students each and every day. The determination to do their very best and the dedication to students was nothing less than heroic.

Thank you to our families. The families of Centralia demonstrated tremendous flexibility, teamwork and patience as we responded to the fluid nature of this pandemic. The structure and changes to the school year were unprecedented and impacted families in ways we had not imagined. Through it all, families were communicative, flexible and supportive, finding creative ways to make it work for children. I am so thankful for the partnership and support of our parents, guardians and caregivers.

Thank you to our students. Students have exemplified resilience and grit in ways that have helped adults successfully maneuver this pandemic. I am appreciative of their desire to learn and the flexibility in finding ways to not only survive, but also thrive in this pandemic. As I participated in the Centralia High School graduation last week, I was filled with hope for our future as a district, community and nation due to the excellence of the graduates that represent the students of Centralia.

Our future is bright.

We have continued to work to become the district of excellence I know we can be, but I am overwhelmed with hope and excitement for our future. As we work together in the coming years, we will achieve academic and personal excellence for each and every student. I am honored to serve as superintendent of the Centralia School District.

Appreciatively,

Lisa Grant
