Letter to the Editor: In Defense of Conservative Opinions in a Conservative Area

Posted

In response to Mario Barrios’ recent letter concerning his disappointment with The Chronicle, I would suggest that he look around at the political landscape of Lewis County.

This is a very conservative area. As for the Chronicle’s political bent on the Opinion pages, I would suggest that a newspaper reflects the area and its politics.

Do you suppose that The Seattle Times, New York Times, The Washington Post, etc., don’t reflect their areas’ political climate?

If there’s one thing that’s patently obvious, the news media has a huge political agenda, and for the most part it’s liberal. I appreciate that the newspaper I read is conservative on the Opinion page.

It’s a refreshing voice in the wilderness of liberal shouting and posturing.

If Mr. Barrios wants liberal news, he can pick up a Seattle Times at just about any grocery store in the area. And he’s welcome to them all.

Mr. Barrios is obviously liberal in his views. That is his right. Ever since the cost of housing north of here has become so expensive, and/or the crime rates have skyrocketed there, people have discovered Centralia and Lewis County. People from up there tend to be liberal. People here tend to be conservative.

If a liberal political climate is what you desire, why did you leave?

Why do people leave an area, move to a new area and then try to change the new area into what they just gave up?
