Letter to the editor: Landlords need to stop being greedy

Posted

This is my opinion and no one else’s.

It’s come to my attention that after COVID-19 shutdowns where people were told they didn’t have to pay rent that, now, since things have gotten better, the landlords and realtor companies are sticking it to anyone who needs a place to live but can’t due to higher rent.

I’m one who wants to get into a place of my own, but because rent is so high, I have to live with my mom and stepdad.

Mind you, I don’t make near what landlords want, so I’ll be living with them for the rest of my life. Wake up and smell the coffee folks — stop being greedy.

Finding a place under $800 is impossible, let alone being able to pay a pet deposit, first and last month rent, a cleaning deposit and then get utilities turned on in your name. It would cost a fortune. Not to mention the requirement of making twice the amount of the rent.

It’s ridiculous for people on assistance and who have fixed incomes that are barely getting by to begin with.

So, landlords, quit being greedy and lower rents and get over yourselves because all these so-called low income rentals that I have yet to see are non-existent, and with the cost of living, people still are struggling.

So I’m sure you aren’t struggling with what rentals go for, and I’m pretty sure you’re making money hand over fist more than I am for sure. My last home was $1,100 a month, and that was in 2010. Now, that same crappy place goes for $1,800 per month. Now, mind you, this was a two-story place and, yes, they added a bathroom, but it’s still not worth renting at that price.

I feel even with Shalom Village in Centralia that the people who will be living there will still be struggling with finances.

What’s going to happen to them once their time is up there?

The rental prices will still be too high for them to make rent payments and the other things to pay like utilities and whatever else a person living on their own needs to pay in order to survive. Yes, I agree, it’s a great stepping stone, but did the whole picture show what happens after leaving Shalom Village?

God bless the churches that raised money for the place to be possible.

The problem of why we have so many homeless people and others just living paycheck to paycheck is because of greediness.
