Letter to the Editor: Post Office Closures Are Unethical and Unprofessional

Posted

I am a resident of the town of Salkum affected by the postal service issues.

In The Chronicle’s article about post office closures, the postal service failed to disclose that there are more problems than just locking the door of the post office and hanging up a sign.

The residents here had their mail deliveries discontinued on Dec. 13. There was no warning. No note on the door of the post office. Just a discontinuation of service all together.

According to their own code, this is illegal. There were no vicious dogs, damaged mailboxes, road restrictions or other reasons stated in their code to legally have a reason to stop service. Complaints were made by some of the residents. The first one I sent assured me my mail was being delivered.

That’s when I became angry. Are you telling me I have a week’s worth of mail locked in my mailbox and I don’t see it?

How about the customers who receive their medication by mail? It’s so close but sitting in a locked Post Office with no warning so they could contact their doctor and make other plans. Another resident called several of the post offices and no one answered the phone. There was no answering machine. They sent a complaint and received the same message: “be assured your mail is being delivered according to schedule.”

Does the postal service do any training, read their own rules and codes and have a plan B to fall back on? I don’t believe they do. We received some junk mail on Wednesday along with slips to pick up packages at the post office with the locked door.

It’s unethical and unprofessional in my opinion.
