Letter to the Editor: Read the Constitution, the Best Piece of Legislation Ever Written

A reminder to those that would like to change our constitution to fit their own narrative: the constitution of the United States is considered to be the best piece of legislation and literature ever written, second only to the Bible. It still holds up today because it is broad enough in scope to relate to everyone. In regards to the first amendment, Thomas Jefferson said, "I've sworn upon the altar of God, the eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."

Meaning every person has a right to their opinion, whether you agree with it or not. No one can infringe upon that, especially not the government. Some exceptions are if you make threats, such as saying you want to kill or harm someone. But you are definitely entitled to disagree with them. There needs to be more civil disagreement and discussion and less finger-pointing and name-calling.

A world of ignorant people is too dangerous to live in. For instance, thinking the government will take care of them is not only disappointing to the person who believes it but a burden to everyone else who will have to pay for that. This defines fascism, something we have always fought against but is increasingly becoming more and more the mantra. Our country has always been a place where you are expected to take care of yourself unless you are truly unable. The Constitution guarantees you the "pursuit" of happiness; it does not, however, guarantee they will take care of you or create your happiness for you.

Ronald Reagan said, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it along to our children in our bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."



Read the constitution — and the Bible wouldn't hurt either. Here's a novel idea: Go back to teaching the constitution in school.
