Letter to the editor: Trump offered to ‘take back the country,’ and now we’re just handing it over to him

Many out here could be uncomfortable mentioning the same observations that have been creeping up on me recently.

It’s this mania about pumping out executive orders so quickly that the substance of them has to be explained, in a vague sweeping manner, to the one doing the signing: the president, sitting at his desk with pen in hand looking like he’s just been asked to write a convincing excuse about why he skipped school yesterday.

The agenda is to act as quickly as possible. Another election will surely be a catastrophic backsliding, and we’ve already been delayed. Better “fix” elections too. Let’s get on with it.

Get on with what? With dismantling democracy completely by claiming it is infested with fraud and wasteful spending. Get on with “fixing” the problem by gutting everything in sight: Brainwash the public into believing that destroying freedom is the only way to save it. We are frantically running in circles between millions of illegal voters — immigrants eating our pets, and 350-year-olds in the Ponzi scheme called “Social Security.” We ask for no proof: we get none. We are gratified with simple allegations, and we’re deliriously happy that we’re not wasting money arresting anyone.

Presumptions are all we need because those accusations are probably true. The Department of Defense can’t account for $2.2 trillion. I wonder why we haven’t closed down Fort Lewis yet. Get with it, guys!

Remember the campaign boasts at Trump rallies? “We OWN America and we’re going to take it back!” The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with a combined wealth of $1.35 trillion, stood behind the president at his inauguration. The public responds, “You want to ‘take it back? Why sure, we’ll even make it worth your while to haul it away.”

This hardy cult of Trump loyalty is something we have seen before, and this final, crowning manifestation is overdue. We’re playing “catch up.”

Way back in 1986, a character that’d be a dead ringer for Elon — if you gave him a trillion dollars — jumped into the game. He was successful in obtaining the signatures of 44 senators, 190 representatives and 17 governors on his personal Grover Norquist Loyalty Oath. Gosh, if we applied threats in the same manner he did, could we get pledges to respect the Constitution and the rule of law also?

Side note: “We want to restore the Department of Justice to an institution that focuses on fighting law and order” — Trump’s current press secretary.

Grover Norquist is still being praised for the fantastic movement he created in 1986 with these words: “My goal is to cut government in half in 25 years, to get it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub … We don’t need a President who can think. We already know what the top 1% want him to do. We need someone with enough digits to hold a pen.“

Well you certainly got all that, but he’s no John Hancock.
