Letter to the Editor: We Need to Take a Hard Look at the Direction of Our Country

Marty Ansley in his letter misses the entire point of the Second Amendment argument of having arms to protect us from the government. The problem lies with our current government, including the president and both houses of Congress.

In his closing, Mr. Ansley writes, “The idea of democracy is that conflicts are resolved through debate and compromise in state legislatures and Congress, not by force of arms.”

He is absolutely correct, and our current political climate is vehemently opposed to this concept. The Democrats have run this country for two years now and have driven a wedge so wide you could run China through it. There is no debate by the Democrats — it’s “our way or the highway.” There’s no debate, no compromise. They have control of Congress and the presidency, so there’s nobody to stop their rampage through our society and wallets. We have $5 gasoline, illegal immigration running rampant, a transportation system nearly at a standstill (our trucking industry runs on diesel at nearly $6 right now), calls to defund the police, no consequences in our legal system, our children run wild without consequences (see the headline in The Chronicle about the 9-year-old attacking school staff — what do you suppose will be done about that person?), no moral compass in our society anymore (as one Democrat advisor recently said, “We’ll do whatever we have to do to get re-elected”) and our society apparently feels that’s OK because the Dems took absolute control of the Senate and are only a slight minority in the House.

We as a society need to take a hard look at our direction and decide if it’s really OK. So, right now, I feel the need to be able to protect myself from my government, which is totally out of control. We also need to demand term limits, not just talk about it.

Politics was never meant to be a career, but a short service to our country and then retired from to live with what we created.

But even more than that, I feel the need to have weapons to defend myself and my family. We have a terrific police force, but they can’t be everywhere, and until they can arrive, I’ll be defending my family with my weapons.
