A year after the county took ownership of the property through tax foreclosure, Lewis County will now look to sell the 28-acre Mountain View Cemetery.

On Tuesday, the county announced it will attempt to sell the 125-year-old cemetery, with the deadline to submit proposals Feb. 28. The minimum sale price is $36,317.23, the amount of taxes owed on the property.

The Lewis County Treasurer’s Office previously attempted to auction off the property in January 2023 with a starting bid of $53,481, though there were no bidders, according to previous reporting by The Chronicle.

“Situated on 28.3 acres, the Mountain View Cemetery has been a part of the community since 1899 and serves as the final resting place for many area residents, including early pioneers,” the county said in a news release. “To ensure its continued maintenance and operation, the county will require the purchaser to provide proof of a Cemetery Authority Certificate from the Washington State Department of Licensing before releasing the endowment funds associated with the property.”

Since the county took ownership of the property, staff and a team of volunteers have maintained the 125-year-old cemetery. The Mountain View Cemetery is located at 1113 Caveness Drive in Centralia.
