Those who were out and about a lot this holiday season might have seen or heard about a group of people giving out candy canes and helping the community.
Some might even have been one of the people who got some goodies, or whose bill was covered by the group, or even been helped by their donations to families.
This group’s name is Small Acts Of Kindness.
Small Acts Of Kindness is a local volunteer organization dedicated to spreading happiness and holiday cheer throughout the community. It is a nonprofit led by four board members and several volunteers.
Small numbers don’t stop members from being kind.
The group’s motto, according to its website, is “like a dandelion spreading its seeds in the wind, every small act of kindness counts."
The group’s efforts include covering people’s bills at local restaurants, donating to clothing drives and helping other people in need. In addition to all this, volunteers handed out holiday treats and hundreds of candy canes to people throughout Lewis County.
They’re not just a Christmastime group. This season, volunteers were out and about helping from Dec. 5 to Dec. 23, but they spread kindness all throughout the year.
Small Acts Of Kindness’ biggest upcoming fundraiser is a car show during the Winlock Egg Days celebration, held on the third Saturday of June every year. This year, that falls on June 21.
In the past, Small Acts Of Kindness has helped raise over $20,000 for the Cispus Learning Center, an outdoor camp that lets kids experience the outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. In June 2022, it held a Concert For Kindness, an all-day event that had fun activities for kids and adults. The activities included live entertainment, a dunk tank and a beer and cocktail garden. This year, the nonprofit has set its sights on the Winlock Egg Days car show.
April Pennington, the group’s treasurer, said the “recipients' reactions make it all worth our while.”
