It was far from a wire-to-wire victory for the Onalaska boys basketball team on Tuesday, but the Loggers did enough late to pull away for a 52-36 victory over Toutle Lake.
It was a struggle for the Loggers early on, as they scored just 17 points in the first half and trailed the winless Ducks by five at the break.
“We just had no energy, the effort wasn’t great, and we were just not playing connected,” Onalaska coach Fred Sturza said. “We just kind of hung around a bit, and it never felt like that momentum was coming back in our favor.”
Onalaska was able to grab the lead in the third, but it only led by two and it was still anyone’s game entering the fourth quarter.
Things finally came together in the final frame, where Onalaska outscored Toutle Lake 20-6 to pull away.
“We were able to turn it on in the fourth,” Sturza said. “They all just kind of came together during the second half to say ‘hey, we gotta put this away. We gotta figure it out.’ … We finally were able to get that momentum.”
Blaze Underhill led Loggers with 17 points, including nine in the fourth, and Case McGraw finished with 14. Nick Rushton added six, and Justin Jacoby finished with six.
Onalaska (5-6, 4-4 C2BL) will look to win its third game in a row at Rainier on Thursday.
