Clark County medical examiners confirmed Tuesday that the death of the 38-year-old man whose remains were found in a burned Kia Soul in Hazel Dell last August is a homicide.

The medical examiner’s office did not provide more details, saying only that Khalid Al-Hassan died by “homicide by unspecified means.”

Logan M. Melchert, who was Al-Hassan’s roommate, faces charges of second-degree murder and unlawful disposal of human remains in the killing, according to court records.

Melchert allegedly told jailhouse informants that he shot, strangled and then incinerated Al-Hassan because Melchert erroneously believed the man stood to inherit the business owned by Melchert’s father, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Clark County Superior Court.

Investigators recovered Al-Hassan’s burnt remains inside the scorched Kia Soul Aug. 22. He was reported missing by his mother weeks earlier, in July, according to court records.

Melchart is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 22.
