A man and woman were fatally shot in an east Multnomah County home Wednesday morning and a man who knew both victims later killed himself during a traffic stop, investigators said.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office did not identify any of the people or say how they knew each other. They did not say if the man who died by a self-inflicted gunshot was a suspect in the killings.

Deputies responded at 3:53 a.m. to a shooting inside a home in the 8200 block of Southeast Cottrell Road, where they found a man and woman dead. They also found a dog that had been shot and killed.

The Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications issued a shelter-in-place order for area residents and Gresham police used a thermal imaging drone to search for other potential victims but found none, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Around 8 a.m., a Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop the driver of a white Ford utility van near Southeast 98th Avenue and Minuteman Way in Clackamas for a traffic violation. The driver did not stop and deputies chased the van until it stopped at Southeast 131st Avenue near Southeast Comanche Court in Clackamas, authorities said.

Deputies heard a gunshot coming from inside the van, sheriff’s officials said.

SWAT officers approached the van and found the man who was driving the van dead inside. No one else was in the car, investigators said.

Investigators determined the driver knew the two people who were found dead earlier but did not elaborate.

Multnomah County sheriff’s officials released no other information.
