Marie C. Mikalson: 1923-2021

Marie C. Mikalson passed away Monday, May 10, 2021. She was born June 16, 1923, in Casland, Wash., to Frank and Gertrude Kardes.
Casland was a company owned logging community, owned by Cascade Lumber Company, no Boise Cascade Lumber Company. Her father was a locomotive engineer, this was during the years logs were taken out of the hills on flat cars instead of logging trucks. After several moves, they lived in the Swauk. Marie attended schools in Cle Elum, riding a school bus for 35 miles a day. She graduated from Cle Elum High School in 1940, at the age of 16. From there, she attended Central Washington College in Ellensburg. After receiving her BA degree, she started her teaching career in Seattle, Wash. She taught there for four years, during which time she met and married her husband, Bob Mikalson.
When he graduated from the University of Washington, they moved to Centralia. He became a Centralia College Coach and Marie was an elementary school teacher. After she retired, they spent the winters in Yuma, Ariz. They had two sons, Robert K. and Ron of Centralia, Wash. Bob and Robert K. preceded her in death. Marie is also survived by two sisters, Gertrude (Duane) Wells and Frankie (Bill) Minnich; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie requested that there be no services. A get-together will be held at a future date.
