Antonio Campos capped his Tiger days in perfect fashion.
The Centralia senior, and state contender throughout his career, won on the state’s biggest stage Saturday evening at Mat Classic XXXV. Campos, wrestling in the 120-pound 2A boys bracket, notched his third pin of the tournament against Prosser’s Julian Joe Torres in 3 minutes, 59 seconds to secure a state championship.
It wrapped up a senior season in which Campos went 43-2 and won league, sub-regional and regional championships.
Campos beat Bremerton’s Anthony Murphy with a 15-0 technical fall to start his state run on Friday, then pinned Sedro-Woolley’s Owen Ensley (3:52) in the quarterfinals. He pinned Orting’s Trevor Anderson in the semifinals in 2:42 to start off Saturday’s action.
Mat Classic XXXV, the state wrestling championships, kicked off Friday morning in the Tacoma Dome and continued with trophy rounds on Saturday.
Here’s a quick look at how things turned out for the local wrestlers who went undefeated on Friday to start off Saturday morning in the semifinals.
2A Boys
138: Khristian Brant (Black Hills) won both of his Friday matches by pin (5:01 and 3:31). He lost in the semifinals, 19-8, and then lost 13-7 in the consolation semifinals, but beat North Kitsap’s Dayton Heymann, 11-4, to finish fifth.
150: Mekhi Richardson (Tumwater) won his first two matches via pin (4:42 and 1:53). He lost to Orting’s Apollo Cruz, 13-0, in the semifinals and lost to Othellow’s Jeremiah Flores in the consolation semifinals, but beat Lakewood’s Connor Schueller with a 12-4 major decision to finish fifth.
175: Tucker Land (W.F. West) beat Steilacoom’s Jacob Warner with a 9-0 major decision, then edged East Valley’s Devin Pierce 8-7 in the quarters. He beat North Kitsap’s Ben Gomez in the semifinals, 4-3, but lost to Orting’s Levi DiCugno, 3-1, in the championship.
215: Andrew Penland (W.F. West) pinned Renton’s Kalyjiah Young, then topped Othello’s Anthony Solorio in a 13-4 major decision on Friday. He beat North Kitsap’s Zakaria Hammou in the semifinals, 1-0, but lost a tight 5-3 match with White River’s Riley Simmons in the state championship.
285: Talan Meredith (W.F. West) pinned Shadle Park’s Sam Picicci (1:44) and Foss’ Trevion Johnson (5:52) on Friday. He was pinned by Othello’s Mason Perez — who won his two Friday matches with pins in a total of 2:14 — in the semifinals (0:47), and was pinned in the consolation semifinals (2:59), but then finished fifth with an injury-default win over Grandview’s Anthony Ramos.
1B/2B Boys
126: Peyton Hernandez (Napavine) edged Liberty Bell’s Yolo Paz, 5-4, in the quarters on Friday. He lost to Goldendale’s Brock Armstrong, 12-4, in the semifinals, before beating Kalama’s Harrison Suzara 14-3 in the consolation semifinals and then topping Paz again, 9-2, in the third-place match.
165: Bomani Birdwell (Toledo) pinned Davenport’s Brody Schillinger in the quarterfinals but was pinned by Kittitas’ Simon Jones in the semis. He was pinned by Okanogan’s Ayden Grooms in the consolation semifinals and was then pinned by Schillinger in a rematch to finish sixth.
165: Tyson Portmann (Willapa Valley) pinned Napavine’s Carter Catlin and Okanogan’s Ayden Grooms on Friday, then beat Liberty’s Clae Holling, 8-7, in the semifinals. He won the state championship by pinning Kittitas’ Simon Jones in 1:13 in the finals.
175: Jacob Price (Adna) won both of his Friday matches by pin (1:39 and 4:52). He lost, 12-0, to Chewelah’s Dekota Acosta in the semifinals, then lost via injury forfeit to Toledo’s Bayron Rodriguez in the consolation semifinals and finished sixth.
285: Marshall Brockway (Mossyrock) won his first match via pin, then beat Okanogan’s Braydon White, 6-1, in the quarters. He lost to Forks’ Sloan Tumaua, 11-7, in the semifinals, but pinned Rainier’s Ryder Cruse in the consolation semifinals and then pinned Kettle Falls’ Kaden Hippler in 1:49 to finish third.
1B/2B/1A/2A Girls
100: Jocelyn Navarro (Centralia) won her first match via pin (3:47), and then beat Zillah’s Alejandre Esperanza, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. She was pinned Washington’s Kyler Menza in the semifinals and beat Warden’s Alona Casto in the consolation semifinals. She lost to teammate Luna Martinez-Areval in the third-place match, 4-3.
100: Luna Martinez-Areval (Centralia) took a first-round bye, then beat Warden’s Alona Castro in the quarterfinals, 4-3. She lost to Royal’s Sharon Arroyo in the semifinals, then beat Zillah’s Esperanza Alejandre, 4-2, in the consolation semifinals. She went on to top teammate Jocelyn Navarro, 4-3, in the third-place match.
105: Sloan Kruger (Black Hills) won via bye, then picked up a pin (3:05) over Grandview’s Malia Riojas to reach the semifinals. She beat Mya Herrera (Cascade) in the semifinals, 10-8, but was pinned in the championship match by Toppenish’s Sophia Torrez just 14 seconds before the end of the third period.
110: Ramona Reinitz (Centralia) won by pin (4:55) against Othello’s Grayce Mendez in the quarterfinals. She’ll pinned Naches Valley’s Alexis Clements in the semifinals (4:00), but lost 10-8 in the championship to Toppenish’s Adalyne Montiel.
115: Eva Reinitz (Centralia) beat Wapato’s Betzabeth Zaragoza in the quarters, 14-7, and was pinned by Orting’s Marjorie McDaniel in the semifinals (2:30). She beat Forks’ Peyton Johnson in the consolation semifinals, 13-3, but was pinned by Quincy’s Alondra Cordova in the third-place match (3:31).
135: Lia Hornby, W.F. West, pinned Brianna Arias (Toppenish), 0:40. She’ll lost to Arianna Waters (Lake Roosevelt) in the semifinals, 10-2, and lost via medical forfeit to Royal’s Lauren Jenks in the consolation semifinals to finish sixth.
155: Maya Kunkel (Napavine) beat Toppenish’s Islah Alcala in the quarterfinals. She pinned Lynden’s Belen Lopez in the semifinals in 1:51, but was pinned by North Mason’s Sadie Evans in the championship in 2:40.
190: Ynavi Rodriguez (Tenino) won via pin (1:21) in the quarterfinals but lost to Othello’s Elia Velazquez in the semifinals, 12-1. She pinned Enumclaw’s Sydney Poe in the consolation semifinals (1:37), then pinned Rainier’s Katherine Kinahan in the third-place match.
