Mental mistakes cost Rochester in district setback

More than a handful of times this season, the Warriors have allowed mental errors to give up goals and it happened in the biggest game to date.

Two goals in the opening 30 minutes and three total in the first half allowed the Trico League’s third-seeded King’s Way Christian to record a 4-1 victory over the Evergreen League’s second-seeded Rochester on Saturday afternoon in Rochester.

“It is frustrating because I know we can play better than we played today,” Warriors head coach Matt Ashton said. “ KWC was twice as fast as we were. Really good team. I was pleased to hold them for 17 minutes and we had our opportunities, we just couldn’t convert.”

Rochester (12-6) avoided the shutout on a free kick goal in the 50th minute by Justin Gochez. The Knights added their final goal in the 69th minute.

The Warriors will get another shot on their home field on Tuesday versus Forks in an elimination game. They upended the Spartans in both league matchups, but the second meeting was a 3-2 overtime win.

“I told them yesterday we have to treat every game as a loser-out,” Ashton said. “We have to come out with intensity.”
