Mossyrock reeled off back-to-back wins in the semifinals and finals to capture the 1B District IV championship on Saturday at Oakville High School.

The Vikings overcame an opening-set loss to Firm Foundation Christian School in the semifinals to win in four (17-25, 25-14, 25-14, 26-24), then easily cruised past Three Rivers Christian (25-18, 25-20, 25-7) for the sweeping win for the district title.

Against Firm Foundation, Mossyrock was led by sophomore Payton Torrey’s 15 kills, three digs, three assists, three blocks and two aces.

“She just had a strong game in every category,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said.

Senior Morgan Houghtelling added 16 assists, eight kills to go with four aces and three digs, while Paige Houghtelling tallied nine kills, two aces and two assists. Emily Edgar and Hailey Brooks each contributed six kills.

“Hailey served strong in key situations,” Nelson said.

In the title match, Brooks led the offensive attack with eight kills and two aces, while Torrey added five kills and Morgan Houghtelling tallied a team-high 10 assists to go with six digs, four kills and four aces.

“We were a little tired going in,” Nelson said. “We wanted to have no regrets and we talked about staying positive. We had a lot of composure in pressure situations. I was impressed with their effort.”

The Vikings end their first season dropping down from Class 2B to 1B with a 16-1 record, losing only to Toutle Lake, a team that finished second at 2B District on Saturday. Mossyrock has now won back-to-back district titles, the 2B title in 2019 and the 1B title on Saturday.

Nelson said she was proud of the team and happy they were able to end the season with a win.

“Even though it was a huge disappointment not having a state tournament, they came out, worked hard and played well together,” Nelson said. “These last few games, we improved on our weaknesses. They’re becoming great people, and that’s what I look for, and they showed that.”
