ADNA — Mossyrock’s bats were hot entering the postseason.
The Vikings scored 27 runs across two games in a sweep of Morton-White Pass to end the regular season, and Mossyrock coach Darren Kolb said that they hit the ball throughout the week in practice.
The offense went cold at the worst time, though, as the Vikings scored just one run in a 4-1 season-ending loss to Raymond-South Bend in the first round of the 2B District 4 Tournament.
Mossyrock tallied just five hits in the loss, the lone run coming after Gunnar Callies knocked in Shaun Fry with an RBI double in the fourth.
“We just didn’t hit the ball well today,” Kolb said. “We made that pitcher out there look really good.”
That run was a much-needed answer for Mossyrock, which allowed two runs in the half-inning prior.
Both runs were charged as unearned to Easton Kolb, who finished his Mossyrock career with an excellent performance on the mound.
He struck out 10 batters and didn’t allow a hit in four and a third innings. Darren Kolb ended up pulling him after 71 pitches, hoping to save him for Tuesday.
Had the Vikings beaten RSB, they would have earned the right to play on Tuesday, either in a winner-to-state semifinal or an elimination game.
“I’m proud of him,” Darren Kolb said after a long pause. “He puts a lot in. And we didn’t really help him much.”
The Ravens were able to scratch across two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, and though Easton Kolb drew a walk in the seventh, the potential tying run never made it further than the on-deck circle.
Seven of the nine Mossyrock starters are back, but the Vikings will say goodbye to Easton Kolb, Wylde Greisen, and Charlie Edgar, the group’s three seniors. Mossyrock finishes its season 8-9.
