The National Park Service (NPS) has awarded a 10-year concession contract to sell pre-cut firewood and kindling within the Ohanapecosh and White River campgrounds in Mount Rainier National Park to John P. Squires, a sole proprietor.

According to an NPS news release, White River Campground offers 112 individual campsites and Ohanapecosh Campground provides 188 individual campsites and two group sites. Together, both campgrounds provide developed camping experiences to an average of 63,000 visitors every year.

“This is an important visitor service at Mount Rainier National Park. The firewood concessioner helps protect park resources by ensuring that firewood sold within the park will not introduce invasive species,” said Acting Deputy Superintendent Kevin Skerl in the release.

This business opportunity was open to potential bidders from April 6 to July 6, 2021. The contract will be effective on Feb. 1, 2022. Any questions regarding the contract selection process should be directed to Kimberley Gagliolo, an NPS commercial services specialist, at kim_gagliolo@nps.gov or 510-914-9815.
