After fighting its way through a loser-out, lightning-delayed matchup against Kalama Tuesday afternoon, the Rainier softball team didn’t have enough left in the tank in back-to-back losses Wednesday in the 2B District 4 tournament at Fort Borst Park in Centralia.
The Mountaineers dropped a quarterfinal matchup against Forks, 6-2, before dropping a consolation battle with Raymond-South Bend a few hours later, 7-2.
In Game 1, the Mountaineers had a tough time getting their offense going, and committed too many errors to keep up with a disciplined Spartans squad, 6-2.
Brooklynn Swenson went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Alyssa Lofgren went 2 for 3, accounting for four of the Mountaineers’ six total hits.
Ryleigh Cruse pitched a complete game and allowed seven hits with a walk, with just one of the six Forks runs earned against her.
The second contest was much of the same for Rainier, which committed eight more errors and had a hard time getting runs on the board in a 7-2 loss to RSB.
Cruse again pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits with four of the seven runs earned, while Keira Anderson led the way at the dish, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Olivia Earsley went 3 for 3 at leadoff with a walk drawn in her four at-bats.
The loss ends the Mountaineers’ season at 16-5, with a third-place finish in the Central 2B League.
Rainier graduates just four seniors: Chloe Rutt, Lofgren, Modestie Jackson, and Alisha Adamski.
