The Rainier boys basketball team trailed after a quarter against Winlock on Friday, but quickly pulled away over the next two quarters to set up a 58-39 win.
The Mountaineers took a lead into half by outscoring the Cardinals 14-5 in the second, and they pulled away by winning the third 21-7.
“We had a big third, which was in large part due to great ball movement,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “Our communication defensively in the second half was outstanding as well.”
Jake Meldrum led Rainier offensively with 14 points, while Jimmy Meldrum added 10. Nehemiah Linson and Jordan Pringle both tallied nine points, while Hunter Howell scored eight.
Landen Cline led Winlock with 16, and Freddy Patching scored 14.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, as Winlock (4-6, 3-4 C2BL) will head to Napavine while Rainier (7-3, 4-3 C2BL) will host Toledo.
