The Rainier football team started league play off on a high note on Friday, as the Mountaineers toppled Morton-White Pass 64-34 in Morton.

The Mountaineers had no problem scoring throughout the contest, as they scored nine touchdowns, including at least two in all four quarters.

Rainier took advantage of several big plays, including touchdowns of 87, 68, and 40 yards, and they also took advantage of short fields on five Morton-White Pass turnovers.

“There were times we looked good,” Morton-White Pass coach Lee Metcalf said. “But we just can’t turn the ball over five times. It’s unacceptable. We gotta fix that … It’s just devastating.”

All in all, Rainier tallied 456 total yards of offense, including 377 yards on the ground.

Kaden Goodman led the team with 91 yards on just three carries, as most of his production came on an 87-yard touchdown in the fourth. He also punched in an 8-yard TD, while Dorien Cano added 88 yards and a TD on 12 carries, and Hunter Howell tallied 85 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Outside of the turnovers, the T-Wolves were also able to have some success offensively, as Judah Kelly led the way with two passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown, and a kickoff return touchdown.

“I thought we were able to run the ball effectively,” Metcalf said, before again mentioning the giveaways. “We just turned it over too much. And that’s the name of the game in football. You can’t turn the ball over five times and expect to win a ball game.”

Logan Mays ran for 120 yards on nine carries, while Kelly tallied 167 total yards of offense to go with his four total touchdowns.

Morton-White Pass (2-1, 0-1 C2BL South) will head west to try and get back in the win column at Ilwaco next week, while Rainier will return home to host Onalaska.
